VISA SUPPORT
for International Students
If you are an international student with a student visa in Japan, you need to get permission to work part-time. This is called 'Permission to Engage in Other Activities'. Here, we will explain how to get the Permission to Engage in Other Activities.
If you work part-time without this permission, you may face penalties and could be subject to deportation.
Process for Obtaining Permission for Activities Outside the Scope of Visa
-
Prepare the Required Documents
-
Your passport
-
Your Residence Card (在留カード)
-
A completed Application Form for Permission to Engage in Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted (available at the Immigration Office or here)
-
A document proving your student status, such as a Certificate of Enrollment (在学証明書) or Student ID
-
-
Visit the Kyoto Immigration Office
Go to the Kyoto Branch Office of the Immigration Services Agency. You can search online for the exact address and opening hours. Make sure to go during business hours. -
Submit Your Application
At the Immigration Office, submit all the documents. If you're unsure about anything, you can ask the staff for help—they are usually accommodating. You can quickly obtain permission at the Kyoto Immigration Bureau. -
Receive Your Permission
Once approved, your Residence Card will be updated to show that you have permission to work part-time under certain conditions. Make sure to check any restrictions, such as the maximum working hours allowed (usually up to 28 hours per week).
By following these steps, you can legally work part-time in Japan while studying.
